Above, seniors Justin Nicks and Andreya Soleyn rehearse “Metro,” a riveting, dramatic play examining the challenges of criminality and profiling in the life of a modern African American. The play, part of Black Anthology, debuted Feb. 1 and 2 in Edison Theatre. Black Anthology, which takes place during Black History Month, is a student-run production that has been a strong tradition at Washington University in St. Louis for nearly two decades. Each year, students write and produce a politically conscious and artistically creative performance highlighting issues affecting the African-American community. The event also featured poetry and a performance by Stereotypes, one of Washington University’s premier a capella groups. Student organizers aim to continue educating WUSTL community members about black culture and encourage discussion of pertinent issues through dance, music and theatre.
